Program Description

The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) provides services to all Bernalillo County residents at no cost, regardless of insurance. The department is designed to engage the community and assist all persons with a substance use disorder or behavioral health needs to achieve optimal health.

Services Provided

DETOXIFICATION: Social model detoxification is a 10-day in-patient program where individuals are able to safely withdraw physically from their alcohol and/or substance addiction. The on-site Medical Observation Treatment Unit (MOTU) is operated by The University of New Mexico Hospital, and provides medical support for individuals accessing detoxification services.

YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM: The Young Adult Program (YAP) will provide a structured living environment that emphasizes daily living skills and individual goal setting. The program structure will generally include a maximum, 45-day stay for individual's 18-26 years old. Skills and Strengths-based groups, and recreation groups will happen daily, to include an introduction to the evidence-based Community Reinforcement Approach, with weekly groups addressing life skills such as resume writing, job interviewing, civic involvement. Expressive groups will happen weekly, including art, journaling, and yoga/meditation.

OBSERVATION & ASSESSMENT: The Observation and Assessment (O&A) Unit provides emergency room and jail diversion for public inebriates in the community. The program allows for individual walk-ins as well as drop-off referrals by law enforcement and first responders for voluntary individuals, who meet the social model criteria for observation. Individuals will be seen for up to 23 hours, rather than being placed at local emergency rooms or going to jail for citable offenses.

OUTPATIENT CLINIC: The Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic (OPC) is dedicated to enhancing behavioral health access to residents on an outpatient basis for diagnosis and treatment of limited psychiatric conditions not requiring hospitalization. The clients served are typically

SUPPORTIVE AFTER CARE: The Supportive After Care Program (SAC) is a low intensity residential social model program that is designed to allow clients to remain in a supportive recovery environment after completing substance use detoxification and/or rehabilitative services.

THE LIVING ROOM PROGRAM: The Peer Living Room provides a safe place to work with a peer-support worker to de-escalate a situation and receive case management services. The center is warm and welcoming with comfortable living room furniture and soft lighting, located on the South side of the CARE campus, with a private entrance separated from other programs. A variety of resources are available - computers, phone charging, television, case management, snacks, coffee, and much more! Open: Mon. - Fri. 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. The program provides clients with the opportunity maintain recovery and be productive members of the community in a structured living environment and emphasizes daily living skills and long-term management of recovery.
