Abortion Care
If you decide on abortion care, our staff is here to support you through the process. Our focus is on keeping you as comfortable, healthy and safe as possible. Although abortion complications are rare, you have 24/7 access to health-related abortion care at UNM Hospital.
We offer abortion care up to 23 weeks 6 days of gestation (time since your last menstrual period). For those under 11 weeks of gestation, you can choose a procedural abortion or a medication abortion. A medication abortion requires taking two medications to pass the pregnancy from your body. You will need to follow up in a week or two after the medication abortion.
A procedural abortion is offered for pregnancies up to 23 weeks 6 days of gestation. The procedure takes as little as 15 minutes, but the entire visit takes anywhere from four hours to all day due to your recovery from pain medication. If you choose to receive pain medications, please plan on a ride home with a person you know as we will not allow you to drive.
Call now to ask about the cost for abortion health services. Our staff can help you with financial issues, including insurance coverage, non-insurance payment options, and assistance funds. Our staff can also help you with resources for travel and lodging if you need.
If you need financial assistance, funding for abortion care is available through the National Abortion Federation (NAF) Hotline at 1-800-772-9100. Assistance is also available through the National Network of Abortion Funds and Indigenous Women Rising.

Permanent Contraception
Bilateral Tubal Sterilization
A tubal sterilization also referred as “tying your tubes” or “tubal” is a form of permanent birth control. This type of birth control is completed by a laparoscopic surgery, which is a minimally invasive surgery using a thin, telescopic rod with a camera at the end to see inside your body without opening it all the way up. Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a highly effective type of male birth control that is designed to be permanent. In a vasectomy, a small portion of the tubes that carry sperm from testicles is cut and sealed. Watch this video to hear one of our providers describe the procedure.
