Abortion Care

If you decide on abortion care, our staff is here to support you through the process. Our focus is on keeping you as comfortable, healthy and safe as possible. Although abortion complications are rare, you have 24/7 access to health-related abortion care at UNM Hospital.

We offer abortion care up to 23 weeks 6 days of gestation (time since your last menstrual period). For those under 11 weeks of gestation, you can choose a procedural abortion or a medication abortion. A medication abortion requires taking two medications to pass the pregnancy from your body. You will need to follow up in a week or two after the medication abortion.

A procedural abortion is offered for pregnancies up to 23 weeks 6 days of gestation. The procedure takes as little as 15 minutes, but the entire visit takes anywhere from four hours to all day due to your recovery from pain medication. If you choose to receive pain medications, please plan on a ride home with a person you know as we will not allow you to drive.

Call now to ask about the cost for abortion health services. Our staff can help you with financial issues, including insurance coverage, non-insurance payment options, and assistance funds. Our staff can also help you with resources for travel and lodging if you need.

Pregnancy Options Counseling

We understand that an unplanned pregnancy can be difficult. After performing an ultrasound to determine gestation, we will review your options: pregnancy termination (abortion), or continuing the pregnancy and choosing adoption or parenting. We will support you and give you the resources, care and education you need to make an informed decision.

For those without insurance, we offer one low price for pregnancy options counseling—this includes the ultrasound and appointment. Pregnancy tests are free at the UNM Center for Reproductive Health.

Miscarriage Care

Turn to UNM Center for Reproductive Health for compassionate, sensitive miscarriage care. Our team is experienced in counseling, diagnosing and treating people who have a pregnancy loss. We offer the three most common treatments for miscarriage:

  • Waiting to see if your body will pass the miscarriage on its own, with close follow-up care to see how you are doing
  • Giving you medication to help your body pass the miscarriage, with close follow-up care
  • Removing the miscarriage tissue

A wide range of emotions can follow a miscarriage, including grief and mourning. We will work closely with you to help you through this time and to help you choose the best option for your situation.

Early Pregnancy Complications

Our team of compassionate, experienced doctors will help you with early pregnancy complications. We diagnose and treat the following early pregnancy complications:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Pregnancy of unknown location
  • Miscarriage
  • Threatened miscarriage
  • Pregnancy viability
