Neuromodulation
Neuromodulation—stimulation of nerves in the brain—can significantly reduce symptoms of certain treatment-resistant mental health disorders.
Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, is an advanced treatment option for patients with severe major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
The doctor may recommend ECT if other treatments have been ineffective and the condition significantly impairs daily functioning. During the acute phase of treatment, patients receive ECT three times a week in either an inpatient or outpatient setting.
Providers in our ECT program include psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, anesthesiologists, anesthesiology assistants and recovery nurses with advanced training in ECT.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an effective option for treatment-resistant depression. Patients who have not responded to four antidepressant trials and psychotherapy are eligible to receive TMS.
This treatment is performed in an office setting and does not require anesthesia. Patients typically receive five treatments a week (30 to 60 minutes each) for four to six weeks.
