Billing and Insurance / Financial Assistance
We understand that insurance and billing can be confusing. If you can't find the information you need, please call Patient Financial Services at the location where you received care:
- UNM Hospital (UNMH): 505-272-2521
- UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC): 505-994-7468
For help with a written translation or spoken interpretation of your hospital bill please call UNMH Customer Service at 505-272-2521.
Si necesita ayuda para traducir por escrito o interpretar verbalmente su factura del hospital, llame al servicio de Atención al Cliente de UNMH al 505-272-2521.
Insurance Claims
When you arrive for an appointment, please provide your insurance information. You may also be asked to pay coinsurance, deductibles, co-payments and/or down payments before receiving non-urgent care.
After you receive care, your provider will file your insurance claim to your primary and secondary insurance payers. If your insurance provider doesn't respond within 60 days, we may ask you to contact them.
Managed Care Plans
If you belong to a managed care plan, ask your provider's office if they participate with the plan before you schedule an appointment. You will receive a bill for balances that insurance doesn't cover. If you can't pay your balance in full, call UNMH or SRMC to set up a payment plan.
Get Help Applying for Insurance
Our Patient Financial Service representatives can help you apply for Centennial Care (formerly New Mexico's Medicaid program) or for plans on state health insurance exchanges. To meet with a representative, call UNMH or SRMC. If you do not have insurance, you do have the option to apply for financial assistance here.
Patient Financial Assistance
Programs and services are available to help patients cover the cost of care.
The Self-Service Patient Estimate
Utilize the Self-Service Patient Estimate tool to generate out-of-pocket expense estimates 24/7
The amount you pay at your visit may reflect estimated charges and expected insurance benefits or financial assistance. The bill you get after medical care reflects actual costs, which could differ from the estimate depending on the precise services you received.
Call 505-925-0900 to get an estimate of what your out-of-pocket costs may be for services at UNM Health.

Types of Bills
Expect to get separate bills for hospital and provider services. Look for:
- Inpatient hospital bill: Lists charges for services the hospital provided you.
- Outpatient bill: Lists charges for tests or procedures that took place at the time of your appointment.
- Provider bill: Lists fees charged by the University of New Mexico Medical Group, Inc. You may receive separate invoices for medical care, surgery and physician review of your diagnostic tests.
You'll receive separate bills from any emergency physician, radiologist or anesthesiologist who provided services for you at SRMC. Since the medical center doesn't handle billing for these services, call the number on your bill if you have questions.
If you believe you didn't receive services you were billed for, ask us to research the account and billing records to verify the charges.
