From regular well eye exams to treating complex conditions, UNM Health System Eye Care is your one-stop provider for excellent eye care.
Eye Care
Keep your eyes healthy with regular visits to UNM’s eye clinics. We see patients of all ages for wellness checks and chronic eye conditions. Visits typically take one to three hours—bring sunglasses in case we have to dilate your eyes! If you have a co-pay, please pay when you check in.
Well Eye Exams
Our well eye exams are for patients who don’t have any eye condition or concerns. We’ll do a through exam and dilate your eyes to make sure they are healthy. We suggest patients have their eyes examined one a year.
Although insurance does not typically pay for well eye exams, we highly recommend them. Regular eye care helps us detect and treat problems early. To schedule an exam or get pricing information, call 505-272-2553.
Children’s Eye Care
If you’re concerned about your child’s vision or an eye condition, contact our pediatric eye care team. We’ll help your child feel comfortable during the exam at our UMN Hospital location.
Eye Conditions We Treat
In addition to eye injuries and infections, the most common conditions we treat are:
- Amblyopia (lazy eye): Vision in one eye is reduced because the brain and the eye are not working together.
- Astigmatism: The eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, causing headache, eye strain, blurred vision or poor night vision.
- Cataract: The lens in the eye clouds, causing blurry vision. Cataracts are common in older patients.
- Cornea diseases: Conditions that affect the outermost layer of the eye can cause serious vision problems.
- Floaters: These little specks that float in your field of vision often don't require treatment. A sudden increase in floaters with light flashes or vision loss indicates an emergency.
- Glaucoma: A group of diseases that damage the eye, causing vision loss and blindness. Early detection is key—symptoms often go unnoticed until eye damage occurs.
- Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Distant objects appear clear and close objects appear blurry.
- Myopia (Nearsightedness): Close objects appear clear and distant objects are blurry.
