Neda Hashemi-Sadraei, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center and Leader of the Genitourinary Clinical Working Group (GU-CWG).
Dr. Neda Hashemi discusses racial and ethnic health disparities in prostate cancer treatment in The Video Journal of Oncology.
Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer is associated with a cluster of side effects that can cause metabolic syndrome development. Dr. Hashemi’s group conducted the first study looking into whether ADT patients received screening for all of the associated metabolic syndrome risk factors (MSRF), looking at data collected between 2010, when the current guidelines were established, and 2021.
New Mexico is a minority-majority state with 49% Hispanic and 11% American Indians, and the study found disparities with lower screening for those risk groups. Dr. Hashemi says that their study can open a lot of options for recommendations for better screening for MSRF across all groups.
