Moises Harari-Turquie, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology. He leads the Lung Cancers Care Team at UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
What are the types of Lung Cancer?
The two main types of lung cancer are:
- Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), which is the most common type.
- Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), which is less common but can spread quickly.
The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center Lung Cancer Team treats all lung cancers at any stage.
What Are Common Symptoms of Lung Cancer?
The most common symptoms of lung cancer are
- Persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
Contact your healthcare provider if you have any of these symptoms.
Why is Screening Important?
Early detection saves lives. A low-dose CT scan can find lung cancer before symptoms appear — that’s when
- treatment is most effective,
- the most treatment options are available, and
- the cancer can be cured.
UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center offers a dedicated Lung Cancer Screening Clinic for people in New Mexico who are at high risk for lung cancer.
Who Should Get Screened?
You may qualify for lung cancer screening if you:
- Are between 50 and 80 years old
- Have a history of heavy smoking (20+ pack-years)
- Currently smoke or quit smoking within the last 15 years
Talk to your healthcare provider about whether screening is right for you.
