Cancer Research Informatics Information System Access
The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center developed the Cancer Research Informatics Information System (CRIIS) to stimulate, foster and support scientific research and clinical care within each of the Center’s mission areas. CRIIS is a fully integrated cancer informatics platform with an optimized user interface that includes tools for conducting statistical analyses and data visualization.
CRIIS contains:
- confidential/private information, including Protected Health Information (PHI), for patients that have been diagnosed and/or treated at the UNMCCC.
- data derived from several sources, including patient medical records, results from molecular and genomic testing, clinical trial participation records, scheduling records and summary information from the UNMCCC’s hospital-based cancer registry.
- record-level data, without names but with PHI, from the statewide, population-based New Mexico Tumor Registry.
The above-listed data are augmented with:
- de-identified, aggregate data from public and proprietary sources that contain information about population demographics (e.g., race/ethnicity, sex, age)
- socio-demographic information (e.g., measures of income and poverty)
- geographic characteristics (e.g., urban/rural status)
- cancer risk factors (e.g., smoking and obesity)
- preventive behaviors (e.g., cancer screening behavior)
Access to CRIIS is restricted to authorized investigators and authorized members of their research teams to protect and maintain the confidential/private nature of these records.
Apply for Access to CRIIS
Access to CRIIS will be administered by the Application Review Committee. Applications to use CRIIS will be reviewed, approved and tracked by this Committee. Individuals who meet the following minimum requirements will be eligible to apply for access to CRIIS:
- Current employee of the University of New Mexico
- Full or Associate Member of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, or under the direct supervision of a Full or Associate Member of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center
- Successfully completed all training modules.

Two tiers of access to CRIIS
- Level 1 access is intended to support exploratory analyses and hypothesis-generating inquiries, without access to detailed and confidential/private information.
- Level 2 access is intended to support hypothesis-driven research protocols that have been specifically approved by the Human Research Review Committee at the UNM Health Sciences Center. CRIIS will maintain a log of all user activities to enable and support routine monitoring and enforcement of user compliance with prevailing standards.
Individuals who are granted access to CRIIS must agree to abide by the Terms of Use in the Data Use Agreement that is a part of CRIIS.
Penalties for failing to strictly adhere to the Terms of Use in the Data Use Agreement may include, but are not limited to, loss of access to CRIIS, termination of employment at UNM and legal prosecution.
