Tomorrow's Scientists
With more than 11,000 estimated new cases of cancer diagnosed in New Mexico each year, The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center plays a vital role in providing timely, scientifically-based cancer care to our communities. The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in the state of New Mexico.
New Mexico is rich with scientific and technological capabilities. Our scientists take advantage of the nearby resources by combining regional scientific strengths into our programs. UNM Cancer Center scientists lead research programs in Cancer Control & Population Science, Cellular and Molecular Oncology, and Cancer Therapeutics. They also regularly collaborate with scientists from research partners at Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Lovelace Biomedical Institute; and with scientists at New Mexico State University. These collaborations provide important insights and help to unlock some of cancer's most challenging questions.
Since the UNM Cancer Center opened its doors in 1971, hundreds of trainees, recruited nationally and from across New Mexico’s communities, have completed their cancer research training and education here. Together, UNM Cancer Center scientists and trainees work to discover how cancer develops and spreads and to design better screening, prevention and treatment strategies.
Many trainees elect to remain in New Mexico to conduct cutting edge research and provide state-of-the-art cancer care.
