The 1952 Contract is a federal contract between, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Indian Health Service (IHS) in the Department of Health and Human Services, the Bernalillo Board of County Commissioners, the Board of Trustees of Bernalillo County Hospital and the State of New Mexico.

This contract is binding unless all parties agree to change the terms. No changes will be made without federal approval.

Emergency Care

After you visit an emergency department or urgent care clinic, you must notify your HIS Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) office within 72 hours (three calendar days). IHS PRC determines eligibility for coverage based on:

  • Health coverage (Medicaid, Medicare or private health insurance)
  • Tribal affiliation
  • Where you live
  • Whether you notified IHS within three days of care
