Pediatric Pain Management

When chronic pain keeps your child from school and activities, it’s time to find relief—and answers. At the UNM Pain Consultation & Treatment Center (PCTC), we share your goal of easing discomfort. We are the only interdisciplinary pain clinic of its kind in New Mexico and offer the widest range of pain management techniques in the Southwest.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Treating Pain

At the PCTC, our pediatric team includes specialists from a range of fields including occupational therapy, psychiatry and osteopathic medicine. We take a holistic, personalized approach to treating your child.

We’ll start by putting together a plan based on your child’s unique needs. Our chronic pain management for children begins with conservative treatments and behavioral health care. If needed, we may recommend medication or surgery to ease pain.

Your child also may benefit from the UNM Center for Life, which offers integrative medicine services such as massage, chiropractic care and mindfulness meditation.

Conditions We Treat

We see children with a variety of conditions. If your child has pain related to any of the following, ask your pediatrician for a referral:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS)
  • Backaches
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)
  • Joint pain
  • Neurodegenerative disorders
  • Pain-associated disability syndrome (PADS)
  • Sickle cell disease or other
