Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes

Endocrinology disorders can hinder your child's growth and development. Get expert care for diabetes and hormone conditions at UNM Children's.

Your child may need to see a range of doctors. Our pediatric endocrinology team will help you get the best care from multiple specialists—on the same day, when possible. With patient and parent education, nutrition guidance and emotional support, we will help manage your child's condition and improve their quality of life.

You will need a referral from your child’s primary care provider to schedule an appointment. Once you have a referral, call us at 505-272-6632.

Diabetes Care

Children can develop type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body's immune system to attack its pancreas cells. This makes the body stop producing insulin on its own. Symptoms typically appear after age five.

Type 2 diabetes is related to being overweight. Children who eat a less healthy diet or don't get much exercise are more at risk for this condition, which causes the body to produce too little insulin. Symptoms can appear at any time.

Diabetes Symptoms and Care

During your child’s annual well-check, their doctor will test them for diabetes. Get tested sooner if your child has any of these symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Sudden weight loss

Your child can live a normal, happy life with proper diabetes support. The UNM Children's care team will give you the tools and education to manage your child’s health. We offer:

  • Diabetes education
  • Insulin pump therapy
  • Medications
  • Nutrition counseling
