Allergy & Immunology

UNM Children's Hospital is home to New Mexico's only pediatric immunologist. Here, we can diagnose and treat even the most complex immune system and allergy problems.

From runny noses to rashes, we can help get your child back to feeling like normal.

Our immunologists treat a range of allergy and immune system disorders such as:

  • Allergies to animals, food and medication
  • Asthma
  • Eczema
  • Hay fever
  • Lupus
  • Psoriasis

If you think your child has an allergy, visit our Family Health Northeast Heights clinic or the Young Children’s Health Center—a community-based clinic.

Immunity, Allergies & Your Child's Health

The immune systems protect us from dangerous viruses and bacteria. Sometimes these systems respond too much or too little. This can be caused by allergic reactions and immune disorders.

Allergic reactions happen when the immune system responds to a normal substance—such as pollen, certain foods or even your own body— as if it is harmful. Your child may start sneezing, break out in hives or, in severe cases, have trouble breathing.

Our team will test for an immune disorder. From there, we’ll create a personalized care plan for your child. If needed, we can refer your child to a specialist, such as gastroenterologist or endocrinologist.
