A small sample of your blood can tell us a lot about your health. Your results tell us how to help you feel better and stay healthy.
Lab Services
During a visit to UNM Health, your doctor or nurse may order a blood test (blood work). Anytime we ask for blood work, we will make sure you understand what it's for and what to expect.
Simple tests can be done at the doctor's office. For more complex tests, we will refer you to a lab that is convenient for you.
Many UNM Health locations have a lab on site. You can also visit a TriCore Reference Laboratories location, available across New Mexico. TriCore is an independent, non-profit clinical reference lab, co-sponsored by the UNM Health Sciences Center.
Prepare for Blood Work
Most tests are quick, but some require special preparation. For example, the lab may ask you not to eat before you have your blood drawn. Please ask your doctor or lab provider questions if you have concerns. For example:
- Why do I need this test?
- Will the test hurt?
- How will the results change my care?
Healthy Communities, Healthy You
Getting clear data from your blood test is just one way UNM Health supports the well-being of our patients and communities.
