ACCESS Telemedicine Training & Education
Our mission includes responding to New Mexico’s shortage of neurologists and neurosurgeons and providing greater access to care. Through our program, we deliver on-site and web-based training to providers at partner hospitals.
This neurology education covers the prevention and treatment of neuro-emergencies, and the best ways to use telemedicine.
Through mid-2018, ACCESS Telemedicine had provided nearly 500 hours of education and training for 1,597 participants. These participants earned 4,265 approved CME hours. All training was at no cost to them or their facilities.
The ACCESS Telemedicine educational platform includes regular, in-person workshops as well as virtual support. Clinicians and hospital leadership benefit from:
In-Person Training and Education
- Neuroscience Workshop: Before a hospital’s first telemedicine consultation, UNM neurosciences nurses conduct on-site training for emergency department staff, hospitalists and nurses. The workshop builds providers’ comfort with caring for patients who experience stroke, trauma and a spectrum of other neurological disorders. Targeted workshops are also available later, after provider turnover or by special request.
- Neuroscience Distance Learning Series: Neuroscience distance learning is available to all partner hospitals. The full series awards 13.25 CMEs for topics including:
- Acute spinal cord injury.
- Brain death.
- Brain injury, including traumatic brain injury and acute brain injury case studies.
- Neurological assessment.
- Status epilepticus.
- Stroke, including acute ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, stroke recovery and rehabilitation, and tPA for review and competency.
Remote Training and Education
- UNM Neuroscience grand rounds: Partner hospitals can join a weekly, one-hour remote session of grand rounds. UNM’s neurology, neurosurgery or psychiatry departments present cases every Friday. Topics include research, intervention and management of brain injuries. CME credits are available.
- Physician-to-physician educational outreach series: In a quarterly webinar, UNM specialists cover neurology education topics relevant to emergency staff physicians and hospitalists. CME credits are available.
