Biography

Dr. Thornton is a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and serves as a senior associate director of Project ECHO.

Dr. Thornton’s clinical expertise is in the treatment of viral hepatitis. She oversees viral hepatitis programs administered in New Mexico, training primary-care providers and their teams how to comprehensively care for patients with chronic HCV. In addition, she started the New Mexico Peer Education Project: Prisoner Health is Community Health in 2009. Dr. Thornton and her team train incarcerated people in the New Mexico prison system to be peer educators as well as experts in infectious diseases and addiction.

Dr. Thornton currently serves as the co-chair of the World Health Organization’s Guidelines Development Group for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection.
