Biography

Dr. Paul received a B.S. degree in Genetics at the University of Wisconsin (2000). He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and earned his MD in 2004. He stayed at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for General Surgery Residency (2009) and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship (2010). He joined the Division of Trauma/Critical Care at MCW in 2010 and was on faculty for six years. Dr. Paul was recruited to the University of New Mexico in 2016 to develop the Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowships. He currently is the Program Director for the General Surgery residency program as well as the two fellowships. Dr. Paul also serves as the co-medical director of the Trauma Surgical ICU and on multiple committees at UNMH. He is the Vice Chair of the New Mexico State Committee on Trauma (COT) and is active in the national COT, American College of Surgeons, Western Trauma Association, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American Board of Surgery

Personal Statement

Dr. Paul’s areas of interests include thoracic trauma, management of retained hemothorax, and surgical education. He has been involved with multicenter trials through specialty organizations and was the primary investigator on two randomized controlled trials evaluating the use of Ketamine as an adjunct in pain management. He has numerous first and senior author publications and book chapters. However, he is most proud of training residents and fellows to be the best surgeons they can be.
