Biography

Dr. Melody Avila, DNP, RN, FNP-C, is an Assistant Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner for the University of New Mexico, College of Nursing. As a native New Mexican, her professional interests are driven by providing high-quality care to underserved and rural communities. Avila worked for several years in Northern New Mexico at El Control Family Health as a family nurse practitioner at a school-based health center and family practice clinic. She is currently serving on the board of directors for New Mexico Alliance for School Based Health Care and a member of Accelerating Child Health Transformation (ACHT) initiative Center for Health Care strategies and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

She a Clinician Educator for the graduate nurse practitioner programs. Her primary focus for clinical practice and research has on the wellbeing of adolescents’ health. She practices with UNM ADOBE Program which works with youth and families that have had contact with the justice system with a focus on primary care and mental health to remediate adversity and improve resiliency. Additionally, she is currently a PI working on a randomized control trial that will focus on Hispanic adolescent mental behavioral health needs. They are expanding current services, which is a model of integrated, multidisciplinary, sustainable, whole-family approach for primary care, psychiatric care, and navigation support. This pilot project will intensifying the incorporation of telehealth services and expand access to include adolescents who have been referred to Children, Youth, and Families Department, Protective Services.

She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from UNM. Her doctoral project was based on preventing risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus in an at-risk adolescent population.
