UNM Hospitals Clinical Neurosciences Center

In January 2012, UNM Hospitals opened the doors to a new Clinical Neurosciences Center to provide a wide range of treatments and hope for thousands of New Mexicans, young and old, living with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders, chronic pain, epilepsy, dementia and countless other neurologic conditions.

The new center is the only comprehensive neurology, neurosurgery and pain management center in the Southwest where patients can receive high quality care in the convenience of two locations on the UNM Health Sciences campus in Albuquerque. In addition, the facility also features the state's only comprehensive stroke center.

"This facility opens up the ability to bring patients from far and wide and be proud that they're coming here," said Howard Yonas, MD, chairman, UNM department of neurosurgery. "I think they will be comfortable coming here because it's at a level of presentation where the clinicians are proud to work here and patients feel comfortable coming here from anywhere."

The center strives to be on the cutting edge of neuroscience medicine. UNM physicians conduct neurological research from patient trials to drug research in order to improve patient outcomes and health. The research also includes the assessment of teleradiology to improve acute neurotrauma care for the Indian Nations of New Mexico.

"This is a place where people are able to come for care and a place where research in new areas can be done," said Gary Rosenberg, MD, chairman, UNM department of neurology. "We have some of the most advanced technology of any place in the country. We're going to continue to provide excellent clinical care and tie it in with research for many more years to come. This is a major center of the Southwest. People no longer have to fly to other centers for care. We have all the experts here."
